Heartland makes a splash in the Big Red Wine Book

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh, The Big Red Wine Book 2010/2011
 Jun 2010

Heartland Directors' Cut Shiraz 2007
"Oozes flavour, it's plush and luscious and all good things like that. It tastes of dark plums, chocolate, spice and olives, complemented by creamy, coffeed oak. This is a example of a big red - controlled, generous, balanced and complete.
Drink 2010-2015".

Heartland Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
"This needs to be decanted to get the best from it - indeed a vigorous sloshing does it a world of good... It's then a better than decent drop. Dusty blackcurrant, aniseed, chocolate and paprika - it sounds like an odd combo, but it works. There's a fair kick of grainy tannin but it's in harmony with the overall wine. Good intensity here. Drink 2011-2014".

Heartland Shiraz 2008
"Made by the highly regarded Ben Glaetzer and matured in French oak hogsheads (larger oak barrels than usual). It's been a highly successful brand since its launch a handful of years ago - and deservedly so.
The 2008 release has a robust honesty about it. No tricks, just dark, rich, warm fruit. Tastes of peppermint, sweet fruit (plums, cherries and raspberries), pipe tobacco, a touch of pepper and a whiff of vanilla. It feels slightly desiccated - if you try hard you'll find flavours of salted beef here - but it still manages to fully satisfy. Excellent winter drinking. Will impress all comers. Drink 2010-2013."

Heartland Stickleback Red 2008
"Quirky blend of the shiraz (almost two thirds), cabernet, dolcetto and lagrein grape varieties.
The 2008 release smells and tastes interesting. Offers a big mouthful of cherry flavour and plenty of chewy tannins - which we reckon is admirable for a wine of this price - though, admittedly, there's a trace of bitterness as you swallow. Otherwise flavours of blackberries, tar and lavender. With a steak, and a big glass, it wouldn't just satisfy - it'd keep you interested. Drink: 2010-2012."
