What To Drink 2007: Heartland, that's what!

Toni Paterson MW, What To Drink 2007
 Nov 2006

Heartland Viognier Pinot Gris - 2005

Ben Glaetzer from Heartland Wines is certainly not afraid of trying new things. His blend of Viognier and Pinot Gris is unconventional, but it tastes fabulous. It is filled with exotic fruit characters: lychee, guava and even a little lemon. The palate has excellent weight with lively citrus and tropical flavours. This is a pleasant drink, ideal for summer dining. If you like Sauvignon Blanc, this is a good wine to try for something different.

Heartland Cabernet Sauvignon - 2004

If you are a lover of all things decadent, look out for the latest vintage of Heartland Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a big, rich wine filled with ripe, juicy berry fruit. In fact, the palate is almonst syrupy, which will appeal to many lovers of full-bodied red wine. The oak is well integrated and the tannins are fine and soft. If you have a strong constitution, you could drink this wine alone; however, most people will need food as an accompaniment. Vintage cheese would be an excellent choice. At $17, this wine is good value, too.

Heartland Shiraz - 2005

Heartland Shiraz is made with a blend of fruit from the Langhorne Creek and Limestone Coast regions. Consequently, it has great richness, as well as attractive spice characters. This wine is over the top in every way, shape and form, but it has been exceedingly well made - so if you like your wines laden with blackberries, plums, prunes and five spice, you'll adore this one. The palate is so weighty that it is almost syrupy and, although the alcohol is high, there is no heat. For $17, it is great value: better than many more expensive wines.
