Heartland 2003 Viognier Pinot Gris makes its debut
expertwine.com Oct 2003This staggering debut vintage white blend is made by Ben Glaetzer, from the
eponymous, Barossa-based winemaking dynasty. Combining Viognier and Pinot Gris
is an inspired choice. The fruit must be top notch, despite being only young
vines, as the integration and balance in this beauty is astounding. As you know
both varieties are on the aromatic side of the spectrum, but who'd have thought
the partnership would be so sublime?
Ok, it is quite a hefty wine (14 degrees, although you can't taste it) and
the Pinot Gris has been subjected to a little skin contact, in order to coax
more flavours out, but there is true synergy and even elegance on the palate.
The lush peach and apricot nuances in the Viognier are tempered by the greenage
and pear skin flavours in the Pinot Gris.
This is a treat for any lovers of rich aromatic, but dry whites, and a total
bargain at eight quid.
